domain registration

What is a domain name?

A domain is the unique name that defines the address or location of your web site. For instance www.yourcompany.com . With Millions of registered domain names it can be difficult to find the right domain name for your company. Often a single word if it is a common name, is already registered as a DOT COM address, but there are other options including using phrases, or adding inc, llc, etc to the name. Another popular option available to you is the use of different extensions, such as .net, .org, .info, or .us . All of these extensions are equaly usable and accessable by anyone browsing the Internet.

How can I register my domain name?

There are many registration options available, and many companies offer domain registration for discount rates. Some companies are legit, however many other companies are scam companies, often offerring low-priced domain registrations with attached strings they never tell you about. Some companies will bait you with a low cost first year registration, and then raise the rates at renewal time, or others will require you to purchase hosting from them. Unfortunately these companies will register the domain under their name and you have no control over the ownership of the domain name. This keeps you from ever leaving their company as the host.

dh Multimedia does not participate in these types of scams. We offer full service domain registration with or without a hosting plan. We charge $19/year for registration, and register your domains to you, the rightful owner. While we hope you choose us as your hosting company, we do not require you to host on our servers with registration. As the rightful owner of your domain name, you are free to take your name anywhere you want.

Why do I need to renew my domain registration?

When you register a domain name, you are doing just that, registering the name. The fee you pay is to register the name with ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) and while you are the rightful registrant no-one else can use that specific address. However, what you pay is an annual registration fee that must be renewed annually. If you allow your annual registration to expire, it allows someone else to register the name and become the rightful owners of it. So pay close attention to expiration notices you receive. Many companies will pay for several years at a time to eliminate the potential for expiration.
